Color palette generator FAQs
How do I use this color palette generator?
It's really simple! Start by choosing your primary color. This can be any color you like. Normally, that is the color you use in your logos, emblems or main elements of your poster, presentation, site, app etc.
To choose the primary color, use the free-form color picker, input a HEX code, or select from a list of some standard colors. For additional inspiration, you can click through random colors as well.
When you decide on your primary color, the tool will generate 6 color palettes that match the primary color perfectly. Use the one you like the most to pick colors for your next project!
How do I get the color codes for the generated colors?
Click any color in any of the generated palettes to get its HEX color code copied to clipboard and displayed on screen along with RGB values.
How do I read the color palettes?
Column 1: Each color palette has 6 main colors - 4 to use for logos, buttons, highlights, accents, etc. plus 2 additional to use for text and background.
Columns 2 and 3: For each of the 6 main colors you get 2 alternative shades that go equally well with the rest of the palette's colors. So, for example, if you prefer a lighter or darker Color 2, then you can use one of the alternative shades in columns 2 or 3 instead of the default one in column 1. Also, shades can be useful for hover/highlight/shadow/etc. effects of UI elements.
Columns 4, 5 and 6: Finally, the matching dark-mode (or night-mode) colors are available in the last 3 columns. If your project will support dark mode then use those to mach perfectly the tone of your main colors.
Which color palette to use?
Choose based on the color combination in the first columns. Whichever you like that most, that's the palette for you. There is no exact science here - some prefer simple mono-tone colors, others would rather choose a more colorful combination.
IMPORTANT: Colors from different palettes do not necessary match with each other well. So, once you decide which palette you like the most, stick with it.
Any other tips?
Hold Shift while hovering the color palettes to mute all colors but the ones in the current row and column. This may be helpful when you're trying to decide which colors you like better.
Also, do not waste time getting obsessed with color spaces, wheels, gamuts or any other scientific jargon - just pick a few of the generated colors here and move onto the next step in building your project!
